The last post for 2011

Well room 14, what an incredible year we have all experienced. Earthquakes, snow, lots of time off school and many of you coming and going all year. You are an amazing resilient group of children and I know you will have learnt so much more than just school work because of this year.
I will probably never forget you children because of everything we have been through.

19/09/11 Party Time and Art Time

Party Time! On friday night year 3-4 had a disco in the new hall. The new hall has lots of windows and it stayed pretty light inside. We prefer it darker, but it is good for the littlies so they don't get scared. The music was really cool because it was fast and rocking. The seniors did all the music and picked some great songs.

The Disco was super cool . Kate

It should go for 3 hours. The prices should be lower. The food was yummy. Henry

Art Time! Last week people from the Art Gallery came to talk to us about Michel Tuffery. he is a New Zealander but his family is Samoan and he lives in Samoa. He creates animal illistrutations in black and white. They are aminals of the Pacific Islands and Samoa inparticular. We learned that they eat bats in Samoa, but only on special occasion like your birthday.

Here are some Michel Tuffery  pictures and the prints made of animals.

Week 2 Term 3- August 11, 2011

We have been working this week on explainations about the body. Like how the ears work. It is hard to explain. The parts  of the ear are: anvel, hammer, stirrup, ear drum, cochlea ( the big yellow thing that takes the vibration) and auditory nerve. So, first the sound waves from the people talking goes like a big message from the ear to the brain.

We got a buildable skeleton. We built it and did not know if it was a boy or a girl, so the teacher called it Sam, but we liked Funny Bones. We handed it off to room 13 and they are building it now.

We are writing our own explainations of the body.

Our Human Body

This term our topic is Growing and Changing. We have had fun making a skeleton. What do you think about our new class member? Next thing we want to do is put the insides in and the skin on. But it is very challenging because things fall off and we are not sure yet where everything goes!

What we are doing this week. June 30, 2011

Tamsin and Henry:  This week we are learning to write a simile. A simile is when you compare something with something else, like " a cat is as thin as a toothpick". Each of us wrote a simile, turned it into a poem and picture. Here is Henry's poem:

My Dog
He is as fast as a jet boat
He is as black like the dark night
He howls like a howler monkey
He is sly as a spy
He is my favorite dog.

Tamsin's poem:
My Brother
My brother seems as mean as a witch
And is as skinny as a stick
He has hair as straight as a horses mane
He is as stinky as sheep poo
His body is as rough as sandpaper
His favorite pet animal is as soft as silk.

This was a fun project. Our favorite part was drawing the picture and coloring. Tamsin hopes her brother does not read this.

Our Earthquake Diary

As we returned to school after the earthquake, we kept a diary of our experience.....

14 March 2011
20 days after the earthquake....

After 20 days of hearing helicopters thud through the sky, using portaloos, boiling water and shifting houses we are finally back at sschool.  We are enjoing doing normal things.  But what isn't normal is that there are only 8 children and 1 teacher!
Bryn, Zak, Cleo, Seb, Thomas, Jordan, Jessica, Bo and Mrs Mckendry

15 March 2011
21 days after the earthquake...

Yesterday was an unusual day.  Our classroom felt deserted and we had time for exciting activities such as art and sport.  We didn't notice aftershocks and we had a great day. We still have the same numbers of children in Room 14.
Bryn, Zak, Cleo, Seb, Thomas, Jordan, Jessica, Bo and Mrs Mckendry

17 March 2011
23 days after the earthquake...

Christchurch is having a memorial service tomorrow in Hagley Park to remember people who died in the earthquake. Prince William is coming all the way from England.  He must be special because people are making a toilet just for him! (special toilets for special bottoms)
Seb, Thomas, Tamsin, Jordan, Cleo, Bryn, Zak, Jessica and Mrs Mckendry
21 March 2011
27 days after the earthquake...

Prince William flew into Sumner in a police helicopter.  The crowd was excited as he shook hands and chatted to people. He asked Bryn if he was back at school yet.  We didn't see the Royal loo!  Buildings in the city are beginning to be used again!
Bryn, Cleo, Tamsin, Bo, Zak, Seb, Thomas, Jordan, Jessica and Mrs Mckendry

3 months after the earthquake

Finally we have everyone back in our class.  Hannah arrived back from England today and everything at school seems to be quite normal again. We are doing lots of imaginative writing, maths and reading.  Our topic is about plants and we are playing sport every week now.
But.... some things still aren't normal. Four people have left, we are having Tsunami drills, some of us don't live in our normal homes, there are still aftershocks and it takes a really long time to get to some places around town!

What has changed for you?

Another week

Room 14 has had another busy week with bean experiments, poetry writing, sport, drama and running a kilometre for maths. Stay posted as Mrs McKendry learns how to add the photos to go with this news.

Beans Diary

We planted beans because we are learning about measurement for maths. We want to see which bean can grow to a metre high first.

These have been growing for 2 weeks

Persuasive writing

In Room 14 we have been learning to do persuasive writing. Our writing has been about Goldilocks. We have been asking if she should have gone into the three bears house or not. What do you think?
